Scope an internal inquiry carefully
Identify the issue, the relevant business unit, important dates and the records available for review. A focused inquiry may concern a reported discrepancy, a business relationship or conduct requiring clarification. Establish a designated client contact and explain any existing legal or internal review so investigative work can be coordinated with that process.
Preserve context in business findings
Business records and employee statements can be incomplete or inconsistent. Findings should distinguish a documented transaction from an inference about motive or responsibility. A report may organize the chronology, relevant sources and unresolved questions. It supports management and counsel in evaluating the issue rather than automatically establishing misconduct by a particular person.
