Findings and practical limits
A profile name or photograph alone may not establish ownership. We state the basis for account attribution and distinguish confirmed connections from possible matches. Content availability can change, and deleted or restricted material may be inaccessible.
Start with attributable profiles
Provide known usernames, profile links, aliases, relevant dates and the activity you need assessed. Shared names and copied photographs can create misleading matches. Research should consider identifying details and context before associating a public account or post with a subject, particularly when the result will be reviewed in a claim or legal matter.
Preserve the context of online material
A post’s visible publication date, linked page and surrounding content can matter as much as an isolated image. Reports can identify the public source, the information observed and unresolved attribution issues. Deleted, edited or restricted material may not remain accessible, and online content alone does not establish that an event occurred exactly as presented.
